A chiropractic adjustment can be beneficial in so many ways. But what exactly is the chiropractic adjustment and how does it help us?
The chiropractic adjustment, also known as a chiropractic manipulation, is used to address areas within the body that are not functioning properly. Over time, the joints in our bodies can become misaligned or restricted from things like repetitive motions, injuries, traumas, or aging. These joint restrictions are also referred to as subluxations. When the joints in our bodies are not moving the way they are supposed to, it can begin to directly interfere with the function of the nerves that surround the joints. The nerves in the body work as a two-way street. They both send and receive signals throughout the body, acting as the connection between your brain and the rest of your body. When the joints around the nerves are not moving properly it can hinder the function of the nerves by restricting their ability to properly send and receive the signals to the rest of the body. This interference on the nerves can lead to a wide variety of problems, including muscle tightness, pain, numbness, tingling, and much more.
During the adjustment your chiropractor will use either manual manipulation or an instrument assisted technique to help restore proper joint function to the subluxated areas and remove interference from the surrounding nerves. In doing this, your nerves will again be able to properly send and receive the signals to the rest of the body which can result in things such as reduction of pain and tension in the body.
A chiropractic adjustment involves high velocity thrusts applied to the vertebra, relieving sensation, discomfort, and spasms in the surrounding muscles. It also releases joint cavitation, or a "pop", which is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. An alternate way to adjust is through an instrument assisted technique called the Activator. The Activator is a very gentle method that uses a spring loaded instrument to produce the thrust required to help initiate movement in the joints that are misaligned.
Overall, the goal of chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, increase the range of motion, reduce nerve irritability, and improve mobility. Dr. Kirkpatrick will work with you to relieve this pain and get you back to being pain free every single day.
Although many people visit their chiropractor and have an adjustment when something feels out of alignment, a regular visit will help you avoid any pain in the future and will keep your body feeling great all day long.
